Summary

Return to #1 New York Times bestseller Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn world of Scadrial as its second era, which began with The Alloy of Law, comes to its earth-shattering conclusion in The Lost Metal。

For years, frontier lawman turned big-city senator Waxillium Ladrian has hunted the shadowy organization the Set—with his late uncle and his sister among their leaders—since they started kidnapping people with the power of Allomancy in their bloodlines。 When Detective Marasi Colms and her partner Wayne find stockpiled weapons bound for the Outer City of Bilming, this opens a new lead。 Conflict between Elendel and the Outer Cities only favors the Set, and their tendrils now reach to the Elendel Senate—whose corruption Wax and Steris have sought to expose—and Bilming is even more entangled。

After Wax discovers a new type of explosive that can unleash unprecedented destruction and realizes that the Set must already have it, an immortal kandra serving Scadrial’s god reveals that Harmony’s power is blocked in Bilming。 That means the city has fallen under the influence of another god: Trell, worshipped by the Set。 And Trell isn’t the only factor at play from the larger Cosmere—Marasi is recruited by offworlders with strange abilities who claim their goal is to protect Scadrial…at any cost。

Harmony’s vision of future possibilities comes to an abrupt halt tomorrow night, with only blackness after that。 It’s a race against time, and Wax must choose whether to set aside his rocky relationship with God and once again become the Sword that Harmony has groomed him to be。 If no one steps forward to be the hero Scadrial needs, the planet and its millions of people will come to a sudden and calamitous ruin。

I got to read the first 10 chapters (appx 100 pages) via Netgalley, and now I am even more anxious for this book's release。 It's been a while since I read book 6, so there's some details I didn't readily recall, but I felt like the early chapters of this book did a good job of reminding me what was going on in the plot without too much retreading of previously covered territory。 There's been a 6 year time jump since the end of The Bands of Mourning, and now Wax & Steris have a child, Wax is a se I got to read the first 10 chapters (appx 100 pages) via Netgalley, and now I am even more anxious for this book's release。 It's been a while since I read book 6, so there's some details I didn't readily recall, but I felt like the early chapters of this book did a good job of reminding me what was going on in the plot without too much retreading of previously covered territory。 There's been a 6 year time jump since the end of The Bands of Mourning, and now Wax & Steris have a child, Wax is a senator (no longer a lawman) and Wayne and Marasi have been partners (professionally - not personally) for some time。 I was quickly drawn into the plot, and frustrated when I got to the end of chapter 10, and thus must wait until the full book releases to finish the story。 Like many people, I prefer Era 1 over Era 2, but so far this looks to be a fun read! 。。。more

Check it out here: https://www。youtube。com/dragonarmybooks---I'm thrilled to announce that Sanderson has done it once again! In what might be his most action-packed entry yet, The Lost Metal concludes Era 2 of one of my favorite fantasy series of all time。 I have been on the Mistborn train for a very long time now, and now that trains are an actual reality in Scadrial, I can confidently say that Sanderson's grand experiment of revisiting the same world and magic system in different times throughout the planet's history is an astonishing success。The Lost Metal takes place a whole SIX years after the concluding events of The Bands of Mourning (a book that I felt was the "low point" of the series to date)。 The conflict with the shady organization called the Set is still at the center of conflict in Elendel。 However, the majority of this story takes place outside of Elendel in the neighboring city of Bilming。 As a new devious god, Trell, rises in power and influence, Harmony's power and influence are weakened。 Wax must, once again, become the Sword of god。 Wax, along with Wayne, Marasi, and even Steris, must step up to put an end to the Set once and for all。More than any other book in Sanderson's Cosmere, this one weaves together the threads of the universe ever tighter。 We have key players at the forefront of the action that are clearly from different planets。 Although I'm not the most keen on being able to decipher the clues as to who is who, it was still fun to recognize the names of locations and magic systems from some of Sanderson's other books that also take place in the Cosmere。 I'm very much looking forward to reading all of the explanations and theories on Reddit within the next couple of weeks。 You can still certainly enjoy The Lost Metal without having a greater understanding of the Cosmere, but you will find yourself lost and confused from time to time。 Overall, I think Sanderson did a masterful job at advancing Scadrial and the Metallic Arts into a new age。 The Wild West, on the edge of modernization, was such a fun place for Wax and Wayne to play in。 The connections to the original Mistborn trilogy were rich and welcomed。 And the magic system, by far Sanderson's most robust and intricate, was so well refined and evolved that it just felt right and true。 Of course Sanderson is making it all up, but because it follows all of the rules that he originally set for the magic system, it just seems so real。 One (incredibly tiny) complaint is that lack of the Malwish people in this book。 The Bands of Mourning seemed to set up this new group of Scadrians as incredibly important for what was going to happen, yet they get so little "screen time" here in The Lost Metal that I was a bit disappointed。 But really, that's it。 That's my one and only complaint。 I was never bored。 I never felt like things were moving too slowly。 The action was often and colorful。 The humor was on-point。 And the moving moments were truly moving。 For the sake of not spoiling anything, I'm just going to stop here。 Just know that Sanderson is still the King of Fantasy。 He's doing what no one else is doing, at a rate that no one else is doing (you don't count, Stephen King), at a quality that no one else could hope to achieve。 I'm all in for Brandon。 I'm all in for Mistborn。 Now I just have to wait a few years (2025?) for the start of Era 3, an early computer age spy thriller!?!? I。 Cannot。 Wait。Notes on the Audiobook: You already are well aware that Michael Kramer is the best of the best。 Sanderson has used Michael and his wife, Kate Reading, to narrate many of his other books and they are top tier。 I both listened to and read this book so I got the best of both worlds。 While reading my physical copy, I did stop and think a few times that I wanted to hear how Michael gave voice to a particular character or event。 If you're considering doing audio with this one, you won't regret it。I received a review copy of this book from the publisher, Tor, as well as an audiobook version from Macmillan Audio in exchange for a fair and honest review。 。。。more

i should definitely have read this closer to the release date because i felt HURT when i realised i couldn't finish the entire book。there's a six year time jump between the last book and this one, but it feels so natural。 there are changes, of course, but the fundamentals of our main characters remain the same。 it feels like being away for a while and coming home to find that your favourite chair is still by fire, and your favourite brand of tea is in the cupboard。brandon sanderson's writing is i should definitely have read this closer to the release date because i felt HURT when i realised i couldn't finish the entire book。there's a six year time jump between the last book and this one, but it feels so natural。 there are changes, of course, but the fundamentals of our main characters remain the same。 it feels like being away for a while and coming home to find that your favourite chair is still by fire, and your favourite brand of tea is in the cupboard。brandon sanderson's writing is still as (dare i say it) perfect as always。 having recently reread the first three books in mistborn era two, it feels so bittersweet that this is coming to an end。 i am now anxiously anticipating my pre-order arriving, and will be JUMPING on it the moment it arrives。 。。。more

For that reason alone, I finished chapter 2 thinking the HEA had already happened and nothing about the rest of the book could go wrong for me。+ Wax’s new career as a Senator。 What a perfect choice! Wax has neither forsaken his roots, bringing the Roughs’ famous Lawman image to play but also channeling his passion for justice and advocating on a higher level accessible to him because of his aristocratic status which had previously only been seen by him as a discomfort。 + The conflicts are complex。 Any new challenges the crew faces are fresh, natural extensions of the Cosmere world, its actors, and the magical elements to which we’ve already been exposed。 For example, the summary includes, “Harmony’s power is blocked in Bilming。 。 。 。under the influence of another god: Trell, worshipped by the Set。” This situation brings a cross-section of political, cultural, religious and other dynamics into tension。 Note: I have only read through chapter 10 (the entirety of the extended excerpt I received) but will update my review upon a full reading after the release date。 I cannot wait to see how this Mistborn era 2 ends。 Many thanks to Macmillan-Tor/Forge, Tor Books, and Netgalley for access to this eARC sampler, in exchange for an honest review! 。。。more

This book (and the series as a whole) was very enjoyable。 Think 'Indiana Jones' adventure meets 'Sherlock Holmes' in a steampunk, western-like gunslinging fantasy world with loveable characters and lots of action! This final book was a fitting end to the series and tugged at my heartstrings。 Thus, as a whole, I would indeed recommend the Wax and Wayne series。 However, I would recommend that one only embark on this series after you have read the rest of Sanderson's Cosmere books。 Ultimately, I have mixed feelings about this series。 On the one hand, it is fun and entertaining; on the other, it just isn't as good as the original Mistborn trilogy。 For me, one of the things that I liked best about the original Mistborn trilogy was how elegant the magic system and world-building was。 While it held the potential to be intricately confusing, it never was。 In the Wax and Wayne series, however, not only does Sanderson add a whole host of new abilities to allomancy that started to muddy the brilliant simplicity of the original magic system, but he starts to bring in the rest of the Cosmere, tying events to other books that he has written。 For some, this will be a brilliant and highly anticipated convergence of Sanderson's works, but I felt at points that I was maybe missing something。 I have read all but the Stormlight Archives and White Sands, so was better prepared than some others might be, yet I feel like I might have appreciated this more had I read all of the above。 Indeed, I reckon that I will have to re-read the Wax and Wayne series after I have read the Stormlight Archives! That said, it wasn't really a hinderance; the book was fully readable and I was able to follow the plot easily enough。 As a completionist, though, I wish that I had been fully up-to-date with the Cosmere before stepping into this series。 Nevertheless, despite the slight pessimism of the above, this is still a 4 star series! 。。。more
